The European Pet Organization (EPO) – the voice of the pet sector in Europe- is highly concerned about the motion for resolution on “improving EU regulation on wild and exotic animals to be kept as pets in the European Union through an EU positive list” – reference 2022/2809(RSP))” that the European Parliament has just adopted- following the recommendation made by its Petition (PETI) Committee.
EPO reiterates through this statement that it will be pleased to actively contribute to any future discussions, exchanges, hearings... the European Parliament and its Committees may plan in the future on this important societal issue, which is the positive list approach, and more generally provide its sector’s expertise and experienceabout any related matters that put at stake the central role pets play within our society...
EPO supports the position of the European Commission- considering that positive lists of animals that can be traded or kept as pets do NOT provide an effective solution to address the illegal trade in or welfare of live animals....
EPO is a strong believer that the right solution to address the illegal trade in and welfare of animals is education and enforcement and not restriction via positive lists.
